Architectural Design
Architectural courses are designed for students intending to enter drafting, interior or architectural professions. Upon completion, students will be qualified to enter a wide variety of fields at entry level positions.
Being able to express ideas visually is critical in the architecture and design industry. Through this course we will study the various visual communications methods most commonly used in the architectural profession. In addition to technical drawings, we will explore graphics used to communicate ideas within the building industry to clients, designers, fabricators, and general contractors.
Architectural Drafting includes the creation of highly detailed drawings including plans, elevations, sections, and details by utilizing computer programs such as AutoCAD. Through the course we will compile a schematic set of drawings to understand general drawing and sheet layouts, drawings scales, dimensions, and annotations.
Bathrooms were once overlooked and understated rooms but this notion has already started to change. There are more opportunities than ever due to the need to add, update, and renovate these spaces in both residential and commercial settings. This course will guide students through the process of designing both functional and beautiful bathrooms.
In the real estate market, the kitchen has become the most important room in buying and selling a home. The kitchen is often thought of as the heart of a home and is given the greatest investment, making it a critical area of study for architects, designers, and engineers. This course will guide students through the process of designing both functional and beautiful kitchens.
Landscape Design
Anyone can draw! There are no set of rules or standards to follow. Landscape graphics are essential for developing and visualizing ideas, and ultimately communicating ideas with the client in the quickest and most effective way. Students will begin by discovering their own ways of expressive drawing skills either by freehand or with assistive tools. Field trips would be performed (if allowed) for outdoor landscape drawing classes. Students will practice various graphic languages and techniques to translate their ideas into a specific space organization, and finally adapt them to build their own style for visualization. Students will also acquire skills and techniques to organize and render their ideas on paper for best presentation to clients.
This course is designed for students to learn the basic garden design techniques. It focusses on familiarizing students with (1) basic garden design principals and process starting from the site analysis and research; and (2) tools and techniques for creating and representing garden design. It is structured in three parts with the first focused on the basic design process, design techniques and drawing skills to create from concept diagrams to a preliminary garden layout plan. The second part is focused on the various garden types and themes, and the basic principle of selection of plants and materials. The third part is dedicated to designing a student’s dream garden based on what students learn from part one and part two.
This course is designed for students to learn the basic rooftop deck design techniques. It focuses on familiarizing students with (1) the site-specific problems and needs of rooftop deck in urban living, (2) tools and techniques to create a preliminary rooftop deck layout plan. The course is structured in three parts with the first focused on the basic design principal, design techniques and drawing skills. The second part covers the various materials of deck and hardscapes. Students will also learn the basic principle of selection of plants and materials. The third part is dedicated to designing a student’s dream rooftop garden in a multi-family housing in the city.
Visual Communication
The Visual Communication Design program is designed for students interested in careers in graphic design and user experience design. It focuses on teaching students the fundamentals of design and problem solving while providing training in industry-standard software.
This course introduces the fundamental building blocks of design: color, form, composition, and typography. It explores how designers can leverage these tools to communicate and shape ideas. We will cover the basic vocabulary expected of design professionals, and introduce processes for framing problems and developing solutions that students will continue to evolve and refine in later courses. The program will be taught virtually and projects will be completed in Illustrator or a comparable vector based program.
While logos are the primary expression of a brand, so much more thought goes into developing a strong identity system; this course will look at how designers infuse brands with meaning and cover the logo development process from creative storytelling to technical execution.
This course covers the fundamentals of User Experience Design and how UX thinking can be applied to solve complex problems. Students will learn techniques for researching a problem and how to develop and deliver applicable solutions. The course will introduce the core tenants of interaction design and cover best practices for professional designers. Students will be expected to design a website or application at the conclusion of the course.
Digital Training
Digital training courses give students an introduction to various software programs that are used across design industries.
This course is an introduction to the three primary tools of a Graphic Designer’s Adobe toolbox: Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. We will cover the basic features of each program and go over best practices for design.
This course is an introduction to Building Information Modeling (BIM) with AutoDesk Revit software with an emphasis placed on the development of skills and problem solving related to the professions of architecture and interior design.
This course is an introduction to computer-aided drafting and design with AutoCAD software with an emphasis placed on the development of skills and problem solving related to the professions of architecture and interior design.
This is an intermediate level course in computer-aided drafting and design with AutoCAD software with an emphasis placed on the development of skills and problem solving related to the professions of architecture and interior design.
This is an advanced level course in computer-aided drafting and design with AutoCAD software with an emphasis placed on the development of skills and problem solving related to the professions of architecture and interior design.
There are multiple programs UX and Visual Designers can use to create digital products. The core industry staples are Figma, Sketch, Invision Studio, and Adobe XD. These applications leverage similar frameworks for building design files. Instructors will work with students to determine the right application/s for their interests and needs and provide instruction for how to design and prototype within the tool.
Certification Prep
Prepares students for careers in professional industries as drafters and designers.
Prepares students for the LEED GA exam and to enter fields involving green building practices and standards related to the design, construction, usage and maintenance of buildings.
Prepares students for the International WELL Building Institute’s WELL AP exam and to enter fields that seek to create and certify spaces that advance human health and well-being.
